Light Brahma - Get To Know

Light Brahma were brought to America in the mid-1800s and quickly became known for their strength, size, and calm temperament. The Light Brahma variety features a striking white and black plumage, making it a visually appealing choice for those interested in ornamental chickens.

Despite their large size, they are friendly, docile, and good with children and other animals, making them an ideal breed for families.

While Brahmas may not be the highest egg producers, they are steady layers of large brown eggs, and they are also known for their cold-hardiness, which makes them a great choice for regions with harsh winters.

How to Take Care of Light Brahma Chickens:

  • Provide 6–8 square feet of space per bird, as they are large and require room to move comfortably.
  • Ensure a secure, draft-free coop with proper ventilation to keep them healthy in colder months.
  • Feed a balanced layer feed with added calcium, and supplement with treats such as vegetables or grains for variety.
  • Supply fresh water daily, especially in winter, to prevent dehydration from freezing temperatures.
  • Keep their large, fluffy feet clean and dry to prevent mud buildup and reduce the risk of parasites.
  • Due to their calm nature, Light Brahmas are easy to handle and enjoy being around people, making them great pets for children.
  • Make sure they have access to a spacious run or pasture to forage and get exercise, as they are not as active as some other breeds.

Special Notes on Light Brahma Eggs:

  1. Hens typically start laying around 5 to 6 months of age.
  2. Expect 3–4 large brown eggs per week, with egg production slowing during winter months.
  3. Provide extra light (14 hours per day) during winter to encourage laying if needed.
  4. Brahmas tend to be less broody than other breeds but will occasionally go broody if they feel comfortable.
  5. Their large size makes them slow to reach full maturity, so they may take longer than other breeds to become reliable layers.

With their striking appearance and gentle temperament, the Light Brahma is a solid choice for any poultry keeper.
